Elbow Injuries

How should early-stage osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the elbow be treated in adolescents?

Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen

Doctor’s answer

Commonly affecting the capitellum, it is seen in adolescent throwing or gymnastics athletes. In the early stage, when the growth plate is open and the lesion is stable (intact articular cartilage not separated), strict cessation of weight-bearing and throwing activities for 3-6 months can lead to spontaneous healing of most lesions. If there is joint locking, loose body detachment, or unstable full-thickness osteochondral necrosis, arthroscopic microfracture, drilling decompression, loose body removal, or autologous osteochondral grafting may be required.
