Youth hip injury
Could sudden front-of-pelvis pain after running or jumping in a teenager be an avulsion fracture?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Yes. Because the growth plates are not fully closed in adolescents, sudden muscle traction during sprinting, kicking, or jumping can cause avulsion injuries of the anterior superior iliac spine, anterior inferior iliac spine, or ischial tuberosity. Sudden pain, limping, or local tenderness should lead to stopping sport and obtaining imaging.
