Ankle fracture
Can an ankle fracture be treated conservatively, and how is surgery decided?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
The main factors are fracture displacement, ankle mortise stability, involvement of multiple ankle structures, and soft-tissue condition. Stable fractures without obvious displacement can be treated with a cast or brace. Unstable or displaced fractures often require surgical reduction and fixation.
