Sports-related back pain
Does a lumbar disc herniation in an athlete always require surgery?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Most lumbar disc herniations can start with non-operative treatment, including temporary reduction of provoking movements, pain control, and core and hip rehabilitation. Surgery is considered for progressive weakness, cauda equina symptoms, or persistent symptoms that seriously limit training and daily life despite structured care.
