How can exertional heat stroke be recognised during exercise?
Doctor’s answer
A very high body temperature with confusion, unusual behaviour, poor coordination, seizures, or loss of consciousness should raise strong concern for exertional heat stroke. Start emergency care and rapid whole-body cooling immediately and call emergency services. Continue cooling while transport is arranged.

How can calf strain be distinguished from deep vein thrombosis after exercise?
A calf strain often begins with local pain during a forceful movement and may cause bruising. Deep vein thrombosis can cause persistent one-sided swelling, warmth, tenderness, and tightness. Seek emergency assessment when there was no clear injury or when calf symptoms occur with chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing blood.
Could severe muscle pain and dark urine after intense exercise be rhabdomyolysis?
Yes. Rhabdomyolysis may cause marked muscle pain, swelling, weakness, and tea-coloured urine, and severe cases can lead to acute kidney injury. Stop exercising and seek prompt testing of creatine kinase, kidney function, and electrolytes. Do not try to manage significant symptoms by simply drinking large amounts of water.
Can insufficient sleep increase sports injury risk and slow recovery?
Insufficient sleep can reduce reaction speed, attention, and movement control and can interfere with muscle repair, pain regulation, and recovery after training. Athletes should keep a regular schedule and allow enough sleep for their training load. Persistent insomnia, marked daytime sleepiness, or snoring with pauses in breathing warrants assessment.
