Stress fracture
Which stress fractures are high risk and need more active management?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Stress fractures of the femoral neck, navicular, proximal fifth metatarsal, and talus are higher risk because they may progress to complete fracture or non-union. MRI is often used when pain persists despite normal X-rays. High-risk sites may require stricter weight-bearing restriction, and some patients need surgery.
