Stress Fractures
Why is a navicular stress fracture in athletes considered a high-risk fracture?

Doctor’s answer
The navicular bone is located at the apex of the medial arch, bearing significant push-off shear forces, and its central 1/3 region is a physiologically relatively avascular zone (Watershed zone). Once a stress fracture occurs, it can easily progress to a complete fracture, delayed healing, or even nonunion and avascular necrosis. Upon diagnosis, strict non-weight-bearing immobilization for 6-8 weeks is required; for fractures with significant displacement, widened gaps, or in high-level competitive athletes, early percutaneous screw fixation is usually recommended.
