Ankle impingement
Could pinching pain at the back of the ankle be posterior ankle impingement?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Yes. Football, dance, gymnastics, and repeated ankle plantarflexion can trigger posterior ankle pain that worsens with toe-standing, squatting, or kicking. Treatment includes reducing provoking movements, rehabilitation, anti-inflammatory pain control, and imaging assessment; persistent bony or soft-tissue impingement may require arthroscopic treatment.
