Sports orthopedic emergency
Why is a posterior sternoclavicular dislocation considered an emergency, and how is it managed?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
The posterior aspect of the sternoclavicular joint lies directly adjacent to vital mediastinal structures, including great vessels, trachea, esophagus, and nerve plexuses. Posterior displacement of the medial clavicle can cause airway compromise, dysphagia, or neurovascular compression. Immediate CT imaging is warranted, and reduction should be performed in an operating room with cardiothoracic or vascular surgical support available.
