Hand ligament injury
Could thumb-base instability after skiing or ball sports be skier’s thumb?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Yes. Skier’s thumb usually refers to injury of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, often after a fall onto the hand, ball-sport contact, or forced opening of the thumb. Mild injury may use splinting; complete tear, obvious instability, or Stener lesion usually requires hand-surgery assessment.
