What is the real effect of stem cell injections for knee osteoarthritis and cartilage injuries?

Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen

Doctor’s answer

Mesenchymal stem cells (such as adipose-derived SVF and bone marrow aspirate concentrate BMAC) have shown potential for anti-inflammatory effects, modulating the joint microenvironment, and short-term pain relief in some patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. However, they currently cannot achieve large-scale anatomical regeneration of full-thickness cartilage defects. Treatment should be combined with clinical trial protocols and regulatory approvals, and false advertising should be avoided. It cannot replace weight loss, muscle strength training, and lower limb alignment correction.
