Joint loose bodies
Do loose bodies from synovial chondromatosis need arthroscopic treatment?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
If loose bodies cause recurrent pain, swelling, catching, or restricted motion, surgery is often needed to remove them, and some patients also need treatment of abnormal synovium. Arthroscopic or open surgery depends on the number, size, and location of loose bodies and the synovial condition. Follow-up is needed for recurrence and osteoarthritis progression.
