Tarsal coalition
Should a teenager with stiff flatfeet and recurrent sprains be assessed for tarsal coalition?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Yes, especially with restricted hindfoot motion. Abnormal bony, cartilaginous or fibrous connections can limit movement. Examination and selected imaging establish the diagnosis. Asymptomatic coalitions may be observed; painful ones usually start with conservative treatment.
