Peripheral Nerve Compression
After exercise, I have burning and numbness in my foot. Does tarsal tunnel syndrome always require surgery?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Not always. Once tibial nerve compression at the inner ankle is confirmed, initial management may include activity modification, footwear or orthotic adjustments, medication, and rehabilitation. Persistent compression, clear space-occupying lesions, or ineffective non-surgical treatment may necessitate nerve decompression. Other causes of foot numbness should also be ruled out.
