Foot and Ankle Sports Injuries
There is a bony prominence on the inside of my arch, and it hurts after activity. Does an accessory navicular need to be removed?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Asymptomatic accessory naviculars usually do not require surgery. If painful, initially reduce local shoe pressure, provide arch support, and use a walking boot or cast for severe cases. Persistent pain after non-surgical treatment may warrant surgical evaluation based on accessory navicular type, tendon attachment, and foot alignment.
