Why do some athletes choose surgery for a fifth metatarsal Jones fracture?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
This area has relatively limited blood supply, posing risks of delayed healing, nonunion, and refracture. Some patients can be treated with immobilization and weight-bearing restrictions; those with high athletic demands or poor healing may opt for internal fixation. Return to running and jumping should be based on imaging healing and functional assessment, not just pain resolution.
