Sports Emergencies
Can acute compartment syndrome be treated conservatively when the leg becomes increasingly tight and painful after an injury?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
This is a surgical emergency requiring immediate attention. Persistently elevated pressure can damage muscles and nerves, and disproportionate pain, pain on stretching, or numbness should prompt immediate emergency care. Diagnosis typically necessitates urgent fasciotomy to relieve pressure, and waiting for massage, ice, or pain medication to take effect is not advisable.
