Patellar instability
When is medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction considered for recurrent patellar dislocation?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
The MPFL is a key restraint against lateral patellar displacement. For patients with recurrent dislocations, confirmed MPFL tear or laxity, and persistent instability, MPFL reconstruction helps restore patellar stability. Additional procedures, such as tibial tubercle osteotomy or trochleoplasty, are evaluated individually based on skeletal maturity, trochlear dysplasia severity, patellar height, and TT-TG distance.
