Knee Injuries
After kneeling or falling, my kneecap is swollen. Does prepatellar bursitis require surgery?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Most cases are initially managed by reducing kneeling pressure, protecting the area, and controlling pain. If there is skin damage, significant redness, warmth, fever, or drainage, infection should be ruled out, possibly requiring aspiration, antibiotics, or drainage. Non-infectious cases typically consider surgery only for recurrent, refractory cases.
