Ankle sprain rehabilitation
Should an acute ankle sprain be managed with complete non-weight bearing?
Author: Dr. Jiwu Chen
Doctor’s answer
Most ankle sprains do not require prolonged complete non-weight bearing. Guidelines recommend bracing or taping according to pain and injury severity, with progressive return to weight bearing. Severe sprains may need short-term immobilization early, but prolonged immobilization is usually avoided to protect motion and muscle control recovery.
