Exercise Recovery Physiology
Does immediate cold water immersion (ice bath) after strength training affect muscle strength and hypertrophy gains?

Doctor’s answer
Yes. Although cold water immersion (CWI) effectively reduces acute inflammation and subjective soreness (DOMS), the intracellular inflammation and oxidative stress induced by resistance training are key signals for initiating muscle protein synthesis (mTOR pathway) and hypertrophy adaptation. Immediate cold immersion after strength/hypertrophy training can blunt long-term muscle growth; therefore, ice baths are more suitable for rapid recovery between consecutive high-frequency competitions during the season, rather than after routine training during hypertrophy phases.
